DESCRIPTION
RAW is an uncompromising portrait of emotion stripped of restraint. The fragmented face emerges from layers of black, texture and disruption, while the coloured forms spell R–A–W in Morse code—a visual language I first learnt through military training and now use to express what cannot always be said aloud.
During the making of the work, I realised that RAW becomes WAR when reversed. That discovery changed the direction of the piece. Fragments from an earlier artwork responding to the war in Ukraine were drawn into the composition, linking personal anguish with the wider human consequences of conflict.
The result is a portrait not of one person, but of a state of mind: fractured, exposed and intensely alive.
